Since joining DFAT in 2009, Chris has worked in a range of roles, mainly relating to China and Japan.  In July 2026, he took up the role of Assistant Secretary of the North East Asia Branch, covering Japan and the Korean Peninsula.

He previously served overseas as Political Counsellor at the Australian Embassy in Beijing, Deputy Head of Post in Guangzhou and Second Secretary (economic) in the economic section of Australia’s Embassy in Tokyo.  He undertook a secondment to the Office of National Intelligence in 2017–18.

Prior to joining DFAT, Chris completed a double degree in economics and arts at the University of Queensland. He speaks Chinese and Japanese.  Outside of work, he enjoys running and reading, and reading about running.
