Ahead of hosting next year's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, President Yoon Suk Yeol has shared South Korea's commitment to leading global cooperation on artificial intelligence regulation, food security and a clean energy transition.
During the official handover ceremony in Peru (this year's APEC chair) over the weekend, President Yoon received the ceremonial "varayok" — a traditional Peruvian staff which symbolises authority and leadership, formalising South Korea's role as the next APEC chair.
During this ceremony, President Yoon introduced the 2025 APEC Summit's theme - jointly building a sustainable future, emphasising the need for countries' collaborative efforts in achieving a clean energy transition and food security.
In 2025, the APEC Summit will be held in Gyeongju in South Gyeongsang Province marking it the first time in 20 years that South Korea will be hosting this significant event.
Hosting the 2025 APEC summit in Korea offers significant opportunities for the Australia-Korea relationship, especially in clean energy, AI and digital economy, supply chain resilience, and collaborative environmental policies, aligning with both nations' strategic interests in regional stability and sustainable development.
