AKBC announces new executive committee members

The Australia-Korea Business Council (AKBC), the leading peak body for Australia-Korea economic cooperation, welcomes the appointment of five new members to its Board, effective 5 June 2020. This brings the total number of board members to 16 and the composition of the board can be viewed here.
 
“The new AKBC Directors bring with them an impressive and diverse range of skills and wealth of experience and knowledge of the Australia-Korea relationship. The new skills will help us in our efforts to diversify the trade and investment relationship with Korea, and look at new and emerging opportunities for partnership such as in the health and biotech sector” said the Hon Simon Crean, Chair of the AKBC. 
 
The appointments also strengthen the geographical representation of the organisation and demonstrate AKBC’s commitment to being a truly national body. 
 
The AKBC also farewells and thanks Rod Dring who has served as Treasurer of the AKBC since 2009. Liz Griffin, Executive Director of the AKBC thanked Mr Dring for his counsel and leadership during his appointment and noted his significant contribution to the strengthening of Australia’s relationship with Korea. 
 
The new Directors are:
 
DR MICHAEL SPENCE AC
Dr Michael Spence AC will serve as a Deputy Chairman of the AKBC. He has led Australia’s first university, the University of Sydney, as Vice-Chancellor and Principal since 2008 and is the University’s 25th vice-chancellor. Dr Spence recently completed a Diploma of Language Studies (Korean) at the University of Sydney. The University is ranked in the top 50 universities in the world, including 1st in Australia and 4th in the world for graduate employability.
                                                                                                                                                                                                  
DR GLENN BEGLEY
Dr Glenn Begley is the inaugural CEO of BioCurate, a joint initiative of Monash and Melbourne Universities and created to provide commercial focus in the early phases of drug development. Dr Begley will also serve as the Chair of the soon to be established AKBC subcommittee on ‘Innovation in Health and Biotechnology.’
 
GRAHAM DODDS
Graham Dodds is Vice President Government Relations based in Canberra at Woodside Energy Limited, a role he has held since February 2019.  He was previously President and Lead Country Manager for ExxonMobil in Korea for eight years, part of a career that spanned 40 years with ExxonMobil. 
 
CLARE POPE
It is our intention to formally appoint Clare Pope as the Treasurer of the AKBC. Clare is a partner in the legal team at PwC, leading the practice in Western Australia. Clare specialises in M&A, joint ventures and project development in the mining, energy, power/renewables and infrastructure sectors. Clare has also been recognised in various legal directories, including Best Lawyers, Doyles Guide and Asia Pacific Legal 500.
 
MARK RIGOTTI
Mark Rigotti is a Partner and Senior Adviser at Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF), an international law firm with offices in over 25 countries. He is the immediate past CEO of HSF having served as the Global CEO for 2 terms over 2014-2020. He was also Chair of the firm’s Global Executive, Chair of the Global Diversity & Inclusion Group and a Member of the HSF Global Partnership Council.

Rod Dring is a partner in the Sydney office of PwC and delivers assurance and advisory services to a broad range of clients and across industries. Rod has over 17 years’ experience as a partner in PwC’s Assurance practice servicing the needs of ASX listed entities, large multinationals and private equity backed businesses across multiple industry sectors.
